How can you tell if a rock might be a geode?

Are there reliable external clues, or is opening it ultimately the only way to know?

Look for a rounded or lumpy shape, a bumpy texture rather than flat crystal faces, and lighter weight than a solid rock of the same size. A rough, cauliflower-like surface is a good sign there's crystal inside.
