Why are galvo lasers so fast?

What allows a galvo system to move dramatically faster than a traditional X/Y gantry laser?

Mirrors instead of a moving head. Galvos steer the beam with tiny, near-instant mirror rotations, while gantry lasers physically move a whole head across the bed. Same power, far faster positioning.
