How small is too small for engraved text?

At what point do you tell someone that their requested wording simply won't remain readable on the available material?

Below about 6pt, legibility dies on most materials. For small text, simplify the font, avoid serifs and thin strokes, and increase letter spacing. If you're squinting at the screen, the material will squint too.
