Why do thin fonts sometimes engrave poorly?

What makes a font unsuitable for very small engraving even when it looks beautiful on a computer screen?

Thin strokes are thinner than the beam spot, so they either burn away or fill in with residue. Bold, even-weight fonts survive; hairlines become smudges at small sizes.
