Should you convert photos to black and white before engraving?

Do you prepare the image manually first or let your engraving software handle most of the conversion?

Grayscale first (the software converts to dithering), but yes — boosting contrast before engraving helps a lot. You want punchy lights and darks; mid-grays turn muddy on many materials.
