Why isn't there one perfect laser setting for every material?

Two pieces of material that look almost identical can sometimes engrave differently. What variables cause settings to vary so much?

Every material, batch, and thickness behaves differently — density, moisture, and additives change how the beam is absorbed. Settings are a starting point, not gospel; the test grid is the truth-teller.
