If layer lines suddenly become more noticeable at certain heights, what mechanical or slicer-related problems should be checked?

Consistent lines mean a Z-axis issue — loose coupler, dirty or bent lead screw, or missed steps. Inconsistent ones point to temperature swings or a slipping belt. Check whether the lines repeat at a regular pattern first.
