Is an enclosure basically required for ABS?

Can small ABS parts be printed reliably without an enclosure, or is controlling ambient temperature too important?

Practically yes — without trapped heat, ABS warps and cracks badly. Even a cardboard box over the printer transforms results. With an enclosure plus glue stick, ABS prints reliably.
