How can you tell if filament is wet?

What symptoms make you immediately suspect moisture rather than printer calibration? Popping sounds? Rough surfaces? Excessive stringing?

Bend a short strand: wet PLA bends before snapping, dry PLA snaps clean. Also listen for crackling while printing and watch for stringing and steam. A few hours in a dryer at 45-50°C brings it back.
