Why can supports add so much print time?

A relatively simple model can suddenly take hours longer once supports are enabled. What makes support structures so expensive in terms of print time?

Supports print at low density, but their tips and dense zones are micro-detailed, and they add travel moves to every single layer. Tree supports trade a bit of time for far less contact scarring.
